Gout is a type of arthritis involving pain and inflammation caused from the crystallization of uric acid that builds up and deposits in the joints. Pain, swelling and redness occur with gout flare-ups, and often pain exists in the big toe. Gout attacks can occur suddenly, especially at night time. While anti-inflammatory medications can help with pain relief, there are many home remedies for gout that are safe and effective in eliminating gout symptoms.
1. Apple Cider Vinegar
Apple cider vinegar offers many natural health benefits, including reducing blood pressure and serving as a remedy for headaches, upset stomach and inflammation. The acid in apple cider vinegar also serves as a pain reliever and helps those suffering from pain caused by arthritis and gout.
Mix one teaspoon of apple cider vinegar in a glass of water and drink. If you tolerate the apple cider vinegar with no side effects, the amount can be increased up to two tablespoons.
• Unfiltered apple cider vinegar – 1 teaspoon
• Water – 6 to 8 ounces
2. Ginger Root
Ginger root provides anti-inflammatory benefits that help relieve pain caused from a variety of conditions and issues, including gout. This root can be incorporated into a variety of foods and drinks as a gout treatment.
Add a half teaspoon of ginger root to a cup of boiling water and mix well. Allow the water to cool before drinking. With daily consumption, gout symptoms and pain should subside. Ground ginger root can also be mixed with water to form a paste. Apply it to the affected area and leave on for at least 30 minutes before rinsing with warm water. Use daily to relieve pain.
As a drink:
• Warm water – 6 ounces
• Ground ginger root – 1/2 teaspoon
As a paste:
• Warm water – 2 tablespoons
• Ground ginger root – ½ teaspoon
3. Lemon Juice
Gout pain stems from an excessive amount of uric acid in the body. The vitamin C found in lemon juice neutralizes the uric acid in the blood stream and alkalizes the body.
To treat gout pain, extract the juice from one lemon and mix with six to eight ounces of water. Ice can be added to create a cool lemony drink. The mixture can be consumed up to three times a day using the juice from just a half lemon rather than a whole lemon.

4. Baking Soda
An increase in uric acid in the body is a primary cause of gout. Baking soda helps lower uric acid levels and decrease pain, making it one of the most effective home remedies for gout.
As a gout treatment, mix a half teaspoon of baking soda in six to eight ounces of water. Drink four times a day, but do not exceed this amount or stomach irritation can occur. Anyone over age 60 should not exceed three times a day. Note that this treatment is not safe for those with hypertension.

Cherries are one of the most well-known home remedies for gout. They are a natural antioxidant that helps the body rid itself of harmful elements. They also contain anthocyanins that reduce inflammation and the occurrence of gout pain. Arthritis & Rheumatism published a study in which 633 gout patients were treated with cherry extract for just two days, and experienced a 35% improvement. Cherry extract was also combined with allopurinol, a prescription medication for gout and kidney stones, and gout attacks declined 75%.
To reduce gout issues, eat 15 to 20 sweet or sour cherries daily, or drink six ounces of black cherry juice daily. For additional benefits, minced garlic cloves can be added to the black cherry juice.

6. Epsom Salt
Epsom salt contains a high level of magnesium, which aids in improving heart health, lowering blood pressure, relaxing muscles and relieving pain. It is a common arthritis treatment and can helpful in relieving pain caused by gout flare-ups.
When experiencing pain from gout, soak in a bath of warm water with two cups of Epsom salt. Remain in the warm bath until the water begins to lose heat. Severe gout sufferers can soak in the warm Epsom salt water two to three times a week, or just once a week to prevent gout symptoms and pain.

Bananas contain high levels of potassium, which provide a multitude of health benefits like improved organ function, relief from anxiety and stress and blood pressure regulation. They also improve water balance, making them one of the most effective home remedies for gout. The potassium helps convert uric acid to liquid that can ultimately be flushed as waste from the body. Bananas also contain vitamin C, which helps reduce pain and swelling.
To help manage gout symptoms, simply eat one or two bananas each day, or add one banana to one cup of yogurt.

Apples contain malic acid, which offers many benefits to the body like increased energy, improved skin appearance and reduced pain. It is prescribed to those with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, and gout sufferers. Malic acid helps neutralize the uric acid in the body to reduce pain and inflammation, providing an essential benefit among home remedies for gout.
While it takes several days for the malic acid to accumulate in the body and offer full benefits, some begin to feel pain relief within 48 hours of consumption.

9. Activated Charcoal
While there are many foods and drinks that help neutralize excessive amounts of uric acid within the body, activated charcoal effectively absorbs uric acid externally. Among one of the safest home remedies for gout, charcoal baths can be taken two to three times a week. Some spas even offer charcoal baths for an even more relaxing treatment.
For an at-home treatment for gout pain, mix one half cup of charcoal powder with lukewarm water to form a paste. Apply the paste to the affected area and soak for a minimum of 30 minutes. Rinse with lukewarm water. Activated charcoal capsules can also be taken; however, it is important to consult with a physician before taking any supplement.

10. Fish Oil
While fish oil is not among the fastest-acting home remedies for gout flare-ups, its real benefit is to prevent the pain and inflammation from occurring at all. Fish oil contains Omega-3 fatty acids which lower triglycerides and provide many health benefits like improvement in cardiovascular, lung and cognitive function and reduced levels of depression. Fish oil also helps reduce stiffness, joint pain and inflammation, which helps those who suffer from arthritis, like gout.
As a gout treatment, simply take a fish oil supplement daily.

11. Cold Water
Cold water serves as an anti-inflammatory and can help reduce pain, making it one of the most simple and easily accessible home remedies for gout. Simply soak the affected area in cold water for 10 to 15 minutes three to five times daily.
An ice pack wrapped in a towel can also be placed on the affected area; however, this should not be done more than twice a day or for prolonged time frames as the consistent cool temperature can crystallize uric acid and increase pain. Ice should not be used directly on skin for gout treatment as it can cause skin damage and increase pain and symptoms. While cool water can provide relief, it also can add to symptoms and should be considered a temporary treatment only.

Celery seed extract decreases uric acid buildup and serve as an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory. It provides effective relief from pain, as well as serves as a preventative measure against gout flare-ups. Because celery seed extract helps reduce inflammation, it is an effective home remedy for gout and other issues caused by inflammation like joint pain, arthritis, kidney and liver infection, irritable bowel syndrome and skin disorders and irritations.
Celery seed extract can be taken as a supplement or fresh, raw celery can be eaten or processed in a juicer to drink celery juice.
